Details:

This workshop will provide you with an introduction to building your own apps for data collection with AppSheet. By the end of this 1 hour workshop, you will have built your first app.

What kind of data will this workshop cover?

This workshop will teach you how to make an app to manage any data that you can put into a table in a spreadsheet. My lab uses apps for field work, lab work, DNA/RNA extractions, keeping track of 1000s of samples, etc.

Workshop expectations

To build an app in this workshop, you need three things:

  1. A laptop with a web browser and a keyboard. All the app-building action will take place in a web browser, so no special software is required on your computer. The AppSheet editor displays well on a wider screen, but it doesn't display so well on a smaller device screen.

  2. Google account. This book will show you how to build an app and connect it to a Google Sheet stored in a Google Drive. Apps can also be connected to spreadsheets in other cloud locations (e.g., Microsoft, Apple, Dropbox, Smartsheet, Box, or Salesforce), but the basic principle of connecting a spreadsheet to an app is the same regardless of where the data is stored. Institutional or government accounts (e.g. ".edu" or ".gov") are not recommended, as they can have limited access to all the features. A regular google account will provide access to all the features in AppSheet.

  3. Internet connection. An internet connection is needed for development because the AppSheet editor is accessed via a web browser. An internet connection is also needed to sync the data entered in your app with the spreadsheet where the data is stored, but the app that you build can still collect data when a device is offline and sync when a device is online.

  4. Mobile device (optional). The custom apps that you build will run in a web browser, so it is not required that you have a mobile device to test the app. However, if you plan on collecting data via mobile devices, it is good practice to test them on the devices during development. You can download the AppSheet App from Google Play or the Apple Store. The app you build will run within the AppSheet App.
